Gallagher Leads Hearing on Artificial Intelligence on the Battlefield

Today, Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-WI) Chairman of the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Cyber, Information Technologies, and Innovation chaired a hearing titled, “Man and Machine: Artificial Intelligence on the Battlefield.”

In his opening remarks, Chairman Gallagher highlighted the importance American leadership on AI, saying, “I’ve become convinced that the CCP, if they win the AI component of this competition, will likely use that technology for evil, as a way of perfecting a repressive totalitarian surveillance state, as well as exporting that model around the world. Whereas we in the West — we in the free world — at least have the chance of using it for good.”

During the hearing, Chairman Gallagher pressed the witnesses on how the United States can harness artificial intelligence for good and ensure the US is leading AI innovation with our allies and partners. The witnesses included Mr. Alexandr Wang, Chief Executive Officer of Scale AI, Mr. Klon Kitchen, Nonresident Senior Fellow at American Enterprise Institute, and Dr. Haniyeh Mahmoudian, Global AI Ethicist at DataRobot.

Watch Chairman Gallagher question the witnesses on:

  • The United States’ current advantages and disadvantages in relation to China in the AI race, how we can harness our data advantages, and how we can be a global leader in establishing guardrails on AI HERE.
  • Key allies for the United States in the AI competition, and who the “geopolitical swing states” are that we need to be keeping an eye on HERE.
